The Vatican isn't just the Pope's residence. It's also home to the Holy See's museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. That said, there are so many types of Vatican tickets that working out which one is best can get confusing.
In this article we've pulled together up-to-date information on prices, perks and how to buy the best tickets for the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel.
Types of Vatican tickets

Since the pandemic, you can no longer buy Vatican tickets at the box office, so booking online is the only option.
Official Vatican tickets
Buying on the official website is the cheapest option: €17 per adult. It isn't the one we'd recommend, though, because you need to factor in the extras and a few drawbacks.
On top of the €17 ticket you'll pay a €5 booking fee, and if you want an audio guide in English, add another €7. All in, an official Vatican ticket with audio guide works out at €29.
Add to that the limited choice of time slots in high season, plus the fact that the ticket is non-refundable under any circumstances.
Below we've highlighted the options we think offer the best terms and prices.
Skip-the-line Vatican ticket (our recommendation)
For us, this is the best Vatican ticket. PRICE: €27.50
- Book here and skip the lines at the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.
- It includes access to every room and gallery, so you can wander at your own pace without rushing.
- The audio guide is optional, but you can add it for €8.75.
- Free cancellation up to 11:59 pm the day before.
Vatican tickets: last-minute skip-the-line
If you book this ticket you can skip the line at the last minute to visit the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Plus:
- You'll save valuable time that you can spend admiring art instead of waiting your turn to get in.
- The ticket without audio guide costs €30.75. As with the other option, you can add the audio guide for €8.75.
- This visit can also be canceled free of charge up to 11:59 pm the day before.
Guided Vatican tickets
The added value of booking a guided tour of the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel is that you can talk to your guide and ask questions, all in English.
With an expert guide you'll spend three hours taking in the Vatican's artistic riches, picking up details you won't find on an audio guide and going straight to the rooms where the Vatican's finest masterpieces are displayed.
You'll visit the Sistine Chapel, where you can admire the work of Michelangelo and other major painters of the Italian Renaissance. This tour costs €51.90 and includes skip-the-line tickets, headsets and an expert English-speaking guide.
Free cancellation up to 72 hours before the tour starts.

Vatican City Pass

For a really thorough visit there's the Vatican City Pass, which gives you access to the main sights of the Holy See and the surrounding area: the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and Castel Sant'Angelo.
It also includes an audio guide app covering more than 130 points of interest in Rome, with images and digital maps you can use offline.
Omnia Card
The Omnia Card is another good way to see the Vatican's main sights.
It also throws in free entry to the Basilica of St. John Lateran with audio guide, 72 hours on the hop-on hop-off bus and entry to two extra attractions of your choice from the Colosseum, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Capitoline Museums and the four sites of the National Roman Museum.
What to see at the Vatican

Visiting the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel is a must, even if you only have one day in Rome.
The Vatican's relics, treasures and art collections rank among the most important in the world. And that's before you get to Michelangelo's astonishing frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and the dome and artistic details of St. Peter's Basilica, the largest Christian church in the world.
Among the rules for visiting the Vatican, shoulders and knees must be covered. Large bags and suitcases aren't allowed either (there are special lockers where you can leave them), and photos and videos are forbidden inside the Sistine Chapel.
